MATT CAVANAUGH, LCSW

He/Him

Folks enter into therapy to examine the internal and external barriers that keep them from cultivating the kind of life they want to lead. Working with a therapist can help you not only recognize the way these barriers impact your life, but help you break through them by utilizing many of the skills and strengths you already possess. Together, we’ll also work to build bridges leading to new skills and strengths, guiding you to the kind of life you truly want to live.

My therapeutic approach is relational, client-centered, and strengths-based. I incorporate elements of dialectical behavior therapy, motivational interviewing, psychoeducation, mindfulness skills training and expressive therapy activities. I have also completed Level 1 Training in Gottman Method Couples Therapy and use the Gottman Method in my work. My main focus is on creating a safe, supportive and trusting environment where clients can share their story and know that it will be received with respect and positive regard.

As a queer therapist, my lived experience informs my practice. I believe in bringing my authentic self into the therapeutic process, as well as connecting with clients’ own lived experience to further strengthen therapeutic rapport. When appropriate, I welcome humor, joy and light-heartedness in sessions. I am sex-positive, non-monogamy/polyamory- and kink-affirming. I have worked with individuals across the lifespan in a variety of settings, including public education, hospital-based intensive outpatient programs, and private practice. I have supported LGBTQIA+, as well as neurodivergent and neurotypical children, teenagers and adults on concerns related to anxiety, depression, interpersonal/relationship issues, identity exploration, self-esteem, life transitions and parent support.

Taking the first step on the therapeutic journey can often be the most difficult. Know that this step will be met by someone with their own lived experience on that very journey. I am currently accepting new teenage and adult clients. Please feel free to reach me at matt@rogersparkcounseling.com to set up a consultation.
